  • Transfer VHS To DVD - Another Lazy Solution

Here is another simple solution to transfer vhs to dvd, the sony vrd-mc5 comes with everything to record everything analog:

    • Record video to DVD from Analog or Digital sources – Playable in most home DVD player

    • Backup digital photos to DVD or create photo slideshow on DVD from Memory card or Sony HDD/Memory Stick Handycam camcorder via USB

    • Playback/viewing on built in 2.5” LCD display
    • Automatic DVD menu and title creation, choose from 4 preset menu designs

    • Automatic DVD chaptering every 5, 10, or 15 minutes, even stop-timer recording!

    • Records on 4.7GB DVD+R/+RW and 8.5GB DVD+R Double Layer Discs

    • 5 recording quality modes allow up to 12 hours of video to be recorded per disc

This is a bit pricier (you might want to check for a used one on Ebay - Then again, used DVD burner are not really recommended). But if you have a big pile of vhs tapes to transfer, this justifies the price.

You can also use the Sony VRD-MC5 for 8mm-dvd transfer.

An added bonus is you can use the built-in slots accept the five most common memory cards for recording digital pictures to DVD as a slideshow or for photo storage. And for the ultimate in clarity and photo-realistic imagery, record high definition AVCHD video from Sony HDD or Memory Stick® Handycam® camcorders to DVD, playable in Blu-ray Disc™ compatible devices.

I would recommend you buy this and make sure you test your first DVD on your DVD player to make sure it is compatible. If you buy from Amazon, you get to return with no hassle. Click here to get the Sony VRD-MC5 and finally transfer your analog video to digital today!

Transfer VHS To DVD - more options?

Posted by admin on August 19th, 2008 and filed under transfer vhs to dvd | No Comments »

Many of us have a stack of old vhs tapes or 8mm tapes waiting to be transferred. They contain priceless memories (like my wedding video) that I want to preserve. To transfer vhs to dvd solutions are many and optimally, your budget and time will help you make the best decision. There are the 4 basic options as far as transferring vhs to dvd:

1 - Paying somebody else to do the job. I am sure if you do a little research in Google or the yellow pages for “vhs transfer” in your city, you will find plenty of services that will transfer vhs to dvd. Now, we don’t know how professional they are. So, before giving them our priceless memories. Give them a test run with a few tapes you are not going to cry if they come back in not too prime condition.

Let’s face it, you don’t want that precious tape of being interviewed by Tom Brokaw to become a doorstop…

This can be an expensive solution, if like me, you have a boxful of tapes to transfer. I know I don’t want to keep everything I recorded on my vhs tapes. I could go through watching each and every tape to make a selection. Using our computer, if it is not too old, we may have a better option.

2- Get a VHS - DVD recorder. You can buy brand name recorder that does this for around $250. But if the prospect of plugging another device in your already packed audio/video stack doesn’t appeal to you, or the fact that you probably have a vhs and dvd player already installed, then there is no reason to spend $250 for a device that will just sit there never to be used again.

3- Use a digital camcorder to capture analog video from the vhs player and then convert to a digital format using a computer. This is another way to transfer vhs to dvd. You will, of course need a DVD burner and a software solution like Ahead Nero.

4- Since I have to watch every tape and make a selection, I might as well do the conversion myself. But if you are not technically inclined or have no time, option number 1 is probably your best solution. Most of us have a computer at home that we can use to transfer vhs to dvd. All you need is a capture card, some cables, software to convert and burn to dvd, a dvd burner and a vhs player. This solution allows for the best flexibility and if later on you find a few more vhs tapes, you are all set to transfer vhs to dvd.

So, if you are a not afraid of installing software and can hook up a vhs player, you can take heart and be assured that your precious video memories are transferred properly. Option number 4 is probably the best to transfer vhs to dvd. You can probably do this on the cheap because if you have Windows XP, you can use the free “Windows Movie Maker”. You will find plenty of software to do the editing and converting for free or under $50 if you can’t find windows Movie Maker. If you are a Mac user, Imovie and iDVD can do the same.

    WJW Fox 8 Analog Shutdown

Posted by admin on July 3rd, 2009 and filed under analog video to digital | 2 Comments »

This was live video of Fox affiliate WJW Channel 8’s analog shut off on June 12, 2009 at 10:00AM EDT. Anchor/reporter Todd Meany and chief engineer Jim Snell were in the transmitter facility of WJW in Parma, which also served as WJW’s original studio facilities back when it signed on as WXEL Channel 9 in 1949. (So you could say it has come full circle.)

Both WJW’s analog signal and digital signal had to be shut off when the conversion took place, as WJW-DT’s signal moved back to channel 8 from its’ temporary home of channel 31. Therefore, after Meany said “punch it, Jim” there was a one-to-two minute wait for rescanning on my cable system until it could pick up WJW’s local 10AM talk show, “That’s Life” (which was previously recorded).

I will be setting up my own account to place this in; however, I have not seen any Cleveland sign-offs yet (excluding WOAC). So I wanted to be the first.
